GRAPHIC AND COMMUNICATION DESIGN
A fundamental educational program in graphic and communication design, developed by well-known design practitioners and aimed at preparing universal specialists, allows you to quickly immerse yourself in the profession.

Course Summary
1st year. Basic Course
First year students study the basics of communication design, basic design software, and also begin to attend lectures on the history and theory of design and art.
Students start their studies with a corporate identity project, then create two series of posters — type and graphic, then move on to designing a space and a multi-page publication, and at the end of the first course they create a full-fledged large corporate identity.
In parallel, in the Design Technologies discipline, freshmen master all the necessary computer programs: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere, Timble Navigation SketchUp. At the Art Practice discipline students are engaged in sketching and illustration, try themselves in group and individual art projects.
In the classes on the History and Theory of Art and Design students receive a powerful theoretical base, studying the main eras of the formation of painting, sculpture, architecture from rock paintings to paintings of the French post-impressionists and Art Nouveau, as well as a course on contemporary art of the XX-XXI centuries.
2nd year. Advanced study of branding
Sophomores delve deeper into branding and try their hand at creating a consumer brand, a line of packaging and a cultural institution brand.While working on the project they get acquainted with the technological features of the production of packaging from various materials and study the possibilities of using a form factor, combining a font solution and illustration in packaging design.
Students also conduct visual research, linking the theme of their main design project with the function of a cultural institution: museum, theater, festival, etc., and develop a brand of a real or invented cultural institution.
At Design Technologies discipline students learn web publishing, designing mobile applications, and the basics of typography. In the classes on History and Theory of Design they choose the two most interesting theoretical courses from more than 20 possible ones for their educational track.
3rd year. Specializations & elective courses
The peculiarity of the third course is that students projects are becoming more complex and voluminous. In addition to the main curriculum students can choose courses they like from the pool of elective courses — disciplines that are not directly related to their specialization, but expand the professional horizons in the field of design and art.
4th year. Diploma
Fourth year students concentrate on work on the graduation project and visual research, and it becomes a complex project, ready for release and interesting for the design community.
Design technologies
HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL takes a project-based approach to education. This means that from the first lesson, the student starts designing his own original project under the guidance of the group curator.
One of the key academic disciplines is Design Technologies, where students receive the basic tools necessary for complex work on any project: a software package for graphic design, software for creating animation, 3D models, motion design and products for the Internet, as well as other tools , relevant to a particular profile.
History and theory of art and design
The academic discipline «History and Theory of Art and Design» includes lecture courses on the history of fine arts, architecture, design, photography, cinema, theater, etc. The courses taught within this discipline are mandatory for all undergraduate and graduate students, with each profile receiving a unique configuration of lecture blocks that are necessary for deep immersion in your specialty.
In addition, we regularly organize open offline and online lectures, where recognized designers, artists, art theorists, and fashion professionals act as speakers. These events are attended not only by students of HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL — we are always glad to see our applicants, as well as professional designers and connoisseurs of contemporary art.
Entry requirements
Both exams are held online.
English language test (online)
English language test is held online in the format of a written test. The time to complete the tasks is 90 minutes.
The use of a dictionary or other reference material during the qualifying event is not allowed.
The test consists of 6 tasks and includes two parts: the Reading section and the Grammar — Vocabulary section. The work on «English» includes the following types of tasks:
- tasks with a choice of answers from 4 proposed;
- tasks for transformation;
- assignments to establish compliance.

Creative project (online)
While preparing a creative project, it is necessary to perform a series of works (from 6 to 12), united by one theme, connected by a single concept and a single stylistic solution.
The subject of the project must be chosen by the applicant independently and must reveal his / her creative potential and level of artistic thinking. HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL offers possible, but not mandatory topics. If applicants choose something different from the proposed topics for their project, then, provided that the principle of seriality, conceptuality and unity of style is preserved, the commission will consider such a project on an equal basis with everyone else.
Before starting work on a project, applicants have to choose a topic. For example: country, city, school, museum, gallery, exhibition, book, theater, club, concert, factory, airport, public organization, store, clothing brand, cafe, etc.
On this topic, you should complete a creative project, for example:
- a series of posters;
- a series of covers — music, books, magazines;
- a series of lettering / typography compositions;
- visual identity;
- a series of packages;
- infographics;
- outdoor advertising.
Applicants download their creative projects on a special landing page of the HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL website. The project can be done using computer technology or manually. In the latter case, it must be converted into electronic form.
The project consists of a series of slides (6 to 15) in jpeg format. The cover for the project will be generated automatically when the project is loaded. When uploading a project online, the applicant writes the name of the project (if any) or the format of the project (for example, a series of illustrations, or a series of posters, etc.) in the field «project name».
If necessary, the applicant can add a description of no more than 700 characters to the project.
If necessary, a link to an external resource can be inserted into the slide, but the applicant needs to check that the link opens correctly in incognito mode. Otherwise, the examination committee will not be able to open it and estimate the project.
Each project must be prepared specifically for HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL entry exams. It is not allowed to demonstrate projects completed for exams to other universities or colleges.
The project must be uploaded to a special section of HSE ART AND DESIGN SCHOOL website during university admission campaign and also sent to in.design@hse.ru.
